My Five Big Reasons for Going to Downtown At Sundown Friday! ~ Gerry McCracken

There are several really great reasons to saunter on over to Downtown At Sundown Friday evening.  These are my big five.

First, the atmosphere.  It’s one big outdoor street party on Ryan Street in front of the DTSD1historic Courthouse. Who doesn’t enjoy a good party….in the street!?  I mean you must admit it’s pretty cool when a city closes an entire street so the local folks can have a good time and blow off steam at the end of the a long, hard work-week.

Second has to be the food. My Mama always said, “Gerry, eat until your satisfied, not until you’re full.” and I’d always reply “But, Mama, I’m not satisfied until I’m full!” Enough said!

Third is the music!  Marcia Ball, Wendy Colonna, Jo-EL Sonnier and this Friday, Rusty Metoyer and The Zydeco Krush! Get ready for some of best Creole French and Nouveau Zydeco music anywhere.

Rusty is a native and one of those self-taught musicians who sat at the knees of of his his uncles and grandfathers who also played Zydeco, Jazz, & Blues.  Rusty learned the accordion and is passionate about the heritage and tradition he learned from his elders. For those of us who couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket or play even one instrument, Rusty also plays drums, guitar, scrub board, and bass…not all once, but still pretty impressive.

Lil Wayne & Same Ol’ 2 Step, Step Rideau, Corey Ledet, Brian Jack, Brandon Ledet, Doghill Stompers, Cedryl Bellou, Jeremy Fruge, and more.  He also has a solo album, “Take My Hand”.

Fourth is the weather. No rain! It’s going to be absolutely beautiful Friday.  Temperatures should drop into the 80’s by 6 with sunny skies.

My fifth and final reason for going to Downtown at Sundown Friday is IT’S THE LAST ONE OF THE YEAR!  So don’t miss it. Bring your appetite, your lawn chairs, your dancing shoes and we’ll see you there.

Rusty Metoyer and The Zydeco Krush take the stage at 6:00.
